Luckily my youngest is in high school, so I don’t have to worry too much about him being home, but other parents with young kids? What the hell do you do with three weeks if you can’t get someone to watch your kids? Let them run wild in the streets? Till April??

Its going to get weird.

They grow up so fast. Well big news: they are gonna have to grow up a little faster this year after being let loose on the streets.

Know what’s fun, working in the IT department at a school that did not start planning/prepping for a shutdown situation early enough. Now, everyone in our department is being driven absolutely fucking crazy trying to get shit figured out about our systems and what needs to be done
in case we
shut down. Which I’m thinking is inevitable.

Yeah, yesterday we were told, “Get comfortable with google classroom, if you aren’t already.” Now, I’ve used it very little, but that part of it won’t be a problem for me ... but that the flying shit am I supposed to teach kids REMOTELY?????
I know they’re running around like a chicken with their head cut off at the district level, because they sat on this too long.

Show them YouTube videos about car stuff. Like this:

I’m thinking there will be many videos.

The company I work for, in Ohio, is currently scrambling to figure out how we can all do our jobs from home. There is a test run for a few people tomorrow. I have a feeling it will be everybody next week if it goes well. It is incredible how fast these things are happening.

My son’s hockey team had made the top 4 teams in the state, qualifying for the state championship playoff....which was just canceled. The kids will be devastated.

Someone wrote a manual just for this situation.

They’re closing schools in Washington (King/Pierce/Snohomish counties)
for SIX WEEKS

I spent most of my summers as a kid just playing around the neighborhood and trying to beat video games. We almost never had summer camps.
Now with my own young kids, after a few hours we’re all going crazy. Summer for us is either nonstop daycamps or family vacations. I don’t know how my mom did it with neither of those two things.

We have a few different softwares that we use for different things (some of which haven’t been used previously by most faculty), and there is some overlap within them and it’s been like chickens with their heads cut off trying to establish what is going to be used for what, and then implementing it. And now that Northwestern, Loyola, and others
have
suspended classes, I’d imagine we won’t be far behind.

So yeah, this:
Ohio officials believe more than 100,000 people in the state carry coronavirus
Sounds like as good a reason as any for Ohio to make bold moves despite the hardship.

Seems like you should be able to find them some good videos to watch.
If you can assume they have computers you might be able to have them play around with some free CAD software? Make 3D printing models that maybe they could actually print someday in the future?

That’s nothing, our schools are shutting down by Monday and will be out until the end of April.
I have been on WFH voluntary social distancing for a week and was expecting it to last until later this month. Now I’m expecting it to be extended to match with the school closures.
Luckily, we have jobs that can be done from home (although my work is going to get pretty precarious, as it involves hardware and it’s hard to get these things done without physical presence) and we have a fairly stable child care situation... I feel for others in the community that don’t have these options.

I guess people will have to get creative and maybe take turns watching groups of kids? Find 5 sets of your kids friends and their parents, and make a pact for one family to take the kids each day of the week – so at least it’s a matter of taking off/WFHing one day every 2 weeks per adult per family. Or those fortunate families with a stay at home parent…hopefully some of them in peoples’ friend networks will be stepping up to help.
So glad that our kid is only 2 and wife is still home with her for another year or so.

Yeah. Here’s where I’m at. My job requires me to walk thru people’s homes. I can do some of my work from home, but how do I remotely view someone’s home?

You know, just this morning I was driving my boys to school and I was thinking of how you could make a similar LOTF story about a virus that only kills adults, leaving the world with only children. Of course, that could never......

That really sucks. I’m sorry to hear that. Is there any talk of trying to reschedule later in the season?

My boys will just plug their heads into YouTube and turn into vegetables. They’ll be fine.

From ohio here, very stupid decision. New York isn’t closing theirs because they have research it does affect healthy kids.
Our system while improving it’s still lacking in many ways. And u nfortunately there will be kids who will starve because of this

I’m an Ohioan and I’m supposed to be starting my new IT job at a university on Monday. They’ve already cancelled all in person classes till the 30th. Shouldn’t affect me but it’s weird to think about. The department I’m going into is probably loving this because they can use it as an opportunity to catch up on stuff they’ve needed to get done.

They’re going to try, but it looks unlikely at this point. At least they had a good season overall and won a couple of tournaments

We (also Ohio) are building laptops expecting a really high number of people suddenly working from home. We also placed an order for new PCs and laptops, expecting a future drought. Total came to something like $126k.
